Comrades Marathon top 10 woman finisher tests positive for Stimulant and Diuretic

Cape Town, 16 September 2014 – The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) confirmed today that Martinique Potgieter tested positive for the diuretic, Furosemide and the stimulant Phentermine at the 2014 Comrades Marathon in Durban on 01 June 2014. The athlete’s B-sample test confirmed the positive test result.

Potgieter who ran for Pietersburg Road Runners finished 9th in the women’s category for the 2014 Comrades Marathon. Potgieter will now be given the opportunity to defend herself against the doping charge in front of an independent anti-doping tribunal.

According to Khalid Galant, SAIDS CEO, the agency had collected twenty doping control samples at the 2014 Comrades Marathon. The top ten male and female finishers were tested. All other tests have returned clean results.
